Mary Lee (Jones) Manes, age 97 of Mammoth Spring, AR was born on November 13, 1925, in Mammoth Spring, AR & passed away January 17, 2023, in Salem, AR. She was united in marriage January 18, 1947, to David Manes, who preceded her in death November 25, 2008. She is survived by: 2 sons, David Manes Jr of Mammoth Spring, AR & Darryl Manes of Conway, AR; daughter, Debra Fitzhugh & husband William of Colorado Springs, CO; 2 Grandsons, Aaron Fitzhugh & wife Kelly, & David Fitzhugh & wife Jean; 4 Granddaughters, Michelle Buchanan & husband Doug, Heather Stewart & husband Roy, Lacey Lingenfelter & husband Justin, & Holly Baker & husband Tim; 8 Great Grandchildren, Elizabeth Buchanan, Daniel Lingenfelter, Gracey Lingenfelter, Audrey Fitzhugh, Austin Fitzhugh, Ethne Baker, Ivory Fitzhugh, & Baby Baker due in February; numerous other relatives & friends. Mary Lee was preceded in death by: her parents, Ernest & Ada Jones; husband, David Manes Sr; daughter Phyllis Merritt; daughter in law Susan (Katy) Manes; son in law Bill Merritt; great granddaughters Katy Maylee Lingenfelter & Persephone Fitzhugh Baker; and her siblings. Mary Lee graduated salutatorian of the Mammoth Spring class of 1943. She started college at Harding University that summer & began teaching that fall at The Grey schoolhouse near Many Islands, AR. She also taught at Camp, Salem, & Mammoth Spring before getting married. She then spent several years travelling with her husband in the military. After his retirement they returned to Mammoth Spring & she spent the next 35 years working as a teacher’s & Title 1 aide at the Mammoth Spring School. She helped many students become better readers & taught countless students their multiplication tables. Services will be 2pm Saturday, January 21, 2023, at the Clary Funeral Home in Thayer, MO, with Bro. Jeff Lancaster officiating, and burial following at the Riverside Cemetery.
